Casey Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit has just celebrated the one-year anniversary of its opening. The new ICU unit was commissioned on 18 May 2020, after many years of planning and construction.
In its first year, Casey ICU has treated 347 patients that would have otherwise required off-site transfer to another Intensive Care Unit. The Casey ICU allows patients to be cared for in their local area, keeping them close to home. This improves continuity-of-care and enhances patient experience.
Penny Woodward, Nurse Manager of Casey ICU, said the greatest achievement within the year the unit has been operational “was bringing staff from ten different intensive care units and creating a cohesive, dynamic workforce that provides exceptional patient care resulting in outstanding patient outcomes”.
“It is an honour to be able to provide our consumers with a critical care service close to their home”.
The 12-bed unit was built as part of the Casey Hospital Expansion Project and features a number of innovated design elements to improve the patient experience, including large patient bays, natural light, and improved privacy with frosted windows able to be switched ‘on’ or ‘off.’
The team at Casey ICU are incredibly proud of this significant milestone.
