Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) transitions to Casey Hospital

The Cardiac Care Unit is up and running at Casey Hospital.

On Tuesday 26 April, our Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) relocated from Dandenong Hospital to Casey Hospital.

Rapid changes and adjustments as part of our COVID-19 response meant we had to delay and defer this move. However, a significant amount of consultation and planning has now culminated in a successful transition.

With current and forecast growth in demand for cardiac services in the Casey-Cardinia area, the relocation of this service will provide our community there with a contemporary clinical service while enhancing our capacity and service capability at both Casey and Dandenong hospitals.

Relocating the CCU to Casey Hospital will ensure we:

  • Create inpatient capacity at Dandenong Hospital to maximise general medical/surgical specialty access to the site
  • Enhance our clinical capability to manage higher acuity and complexity patient cohorts at Casey Hospital
  • Minimise inter-hospital transfers from Casey Hospital to other Monash Health sites
  • Align our clinical services with our longer-term plans (Monash Health Strategic Services Plan, Cardiac Service Plan) and the establishment of the Victorian Heart Hospital.

Future referrals to Monash Heart via the Dandenong Emergency Department will be referred to either MMC Clayton or Casey Hospital. The Monash Heart consult service will continue to support Dandenong Hospital inpatients both in hours and out of hours.

“Our pandemic response has delayed the relocation a couple of times, so it’s been fantastic to have transitioned the CCU and the team to Casey Hospital,” said Zoe Devenish, General Manager of Special Medicine, Cancer, Critical Care, and Casey Hospital.

“We appreciate the patience, co-operation and understanding of the employees affected. Our Casey and Dandenong Hospitals teams have remained patient, and their professionalism has been exemplary.”
