We’re improving the way we receive referrals

Referrals reaching the right place at the right time can save lives. That’s why from 18 July, Monash Health Specialist Consulting Clinics will receive all referrals via the HealthLink eReferral system, and no longer by fax, post or email. eReferral is the safest, most secure and most reliable way to refer a patient to Monash Health Specialist Consulting Clinics.

What’s happening?

  • From 4 July, Specialist Consulting Clinics will preference eReferrals received via HealthLink.
  • From 18 July, all referrals to Specialist Consulting Clinics must be sent via HealthLink eReferral
  • Monash Health will no longer accept referrals sent via fax, email or post
  • GPs can access a HealthLink eReferral form through clinical software such as Medical Director, Best Practice, Genie and MedTech Evolution
  • Other clinicians – including medical specialists referring from their private rooms – can access HealthLink SmartForms through a web based MyHealthLink portal which they can access directly from the Monash Health website
  • We will continue to receive internal referrals (within Monash Health) via SMR.

Why are we making this change?

  • eReferrals are the safest and most secure way to send a referral, and it makes sense to centralise our referral management
  • GPs report a higher level of confidence in eReferrals
  • eReferrals significantly reduce unnecessary delays in arranging appointments for patients
  • Paper referrals sent via fax, email or post pose a significant clinical risk if lost.

Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing information about this change within Monash Health, and with the many GPs and specialists external to Monash Health who refer patients to our care.  To find out more about HealthLink eReferrals, visit the GP eReferrals page on our website.
