Uniform requirements in clinical settings

To help keep our teams and patients safe and promote correct infection prevention measures, all Monash Health employees must follow correct uniform regulations while in a clinical setting.

To comply with our requirements with the National Safety Quality Healthcare Standard – Preventing and Controlling Healthcare Associated Infection, employees must keep their arms bare below the elbow.

Staff identification requirements

Lanyards are not permitted in clinical environments as they pose an unacceptable risk to patient and staff safety.

In line with this, employees in clinical areas are required to:

  • wear staff identification cards attached to a Monash Health branded toggle
  • ensure both first name and surname are visible
  • attach toggles to clothing
  • wear a name badge, in addition to their staff identification card, and display this in a prominent place

Cultural and religious attire

It is important for managers to be aware of and work to accommodate religious and cultural attire, including head coverings when they are worn to comply with religious and cultural requirements. However, these must follow the relevant health and safety regulations and infection prevention standards.

Requests for exceptions and deviations from the uniform framework require approval by the Monash Health Executive Committee.
