Monash Health to deliver services at Sandringham Hospital

From February 2023, maternity, newborn and gynaecology services at Alfred Health’s Sandringham Hospital will be provided by Monash Health Women’s, after having been provided by the Royal Women’s Hospital since 2013.

Women, parents and parents-to-be in the Bayside region can be assured that Sandringham Hospital’s women’s and newborn services remain with ready access to tertiary care when needed.

All other services at Sandringham Hospital will continue to be provided by Alfred Health.

Strength through collaboration

This change to the Sandringham Hospital women’s and newborn service builds on the many successful existing partnerships between Alfred Health and Monash Health to provide better health outcomes for communities in south-east Melbourne.

Continuity of care and the health and wellbeing of our patients remains a top priority and all health services are working closely together throughout the transition.

Staff currently employed by the Royal Women’s Hospital to provide care at Sandringham Hospital will transfer to Monash Health Women’s and will remain at the same location.

“We will welcome approximately 140 staff across nursing, midwifery, medical, administrative, and health information teams to Monash Health,” said Andrea Rindt, General Manager, Monash Health Women’s and Newborn Program.

“It is an exciting opportunity to learn from each other while delivering excellent care to women, their families and babies in the bayside area,” Andrea said.

Care closer to home

A/Prof Ryan Hodges, Program Director of Monash Health Women’s and Newborn Program said that access to tertiary care was a main driver in the decision.

“Once this transition takes place, patients at Sandringham Hospital in need of higher-level care will be transferred to Monash Medical Centre instead of the Royal Women’s Hospital in Parkville which is approximately twice the distance from Sandringham Hospital,” Ryan said.

“For patients and families, it means care much closer to home.”

We are looking forward to welcoming these employees to Monash Health in 2023.
