A proactive approach to gender equality

International Women’s Day is this Wednesday, 8 March. This year’s theme is #EmbraceEquity which highlights that equity is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have.

To reach an inclusive and equal outcome for all, it is important to understand what the term ‘intersectionality’ means, why it is important to apply an intersectional lens, and the effect it can have on our patient and employee experience.

What is intersectionality?

Intersectionality is a concept that refers to the interconnected nature of social identities, such as race, gender, class, sexual orientation, and ability, and how they overlap and intersect with each other. It recognises that individuals can face multiple forms of discrimination or disadvantage and that these different aspects of their identity cannot be separated from one another.

What can we do?

Dr Ashlee Linck, Gender Equity Lead – Organisational Development and Learning, outlines the importance of building in time for self-reflection and being self-aware, as an individual and at an organisational level.

“International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to reflect on your own unconscious biases, attitudes and belief systems, and how these influence our actions.”

“This provides insight into whether you have a level of privilege, directly or indirectly, and how you can harness this for positive outcomes for all.”

“At Monash Health, we are applying our intersectional lens and taking a proactive approach to gender, providing fair opportunities for equal outcomes. This ensures that no one is left behind.”

We review our programs and policies to ensure education, training and learning systems are at the forefront of our Equity and Inclusion Strategy and continue to break down barriers to gender equality to provide an inclusive environment for all.
