Doses of success: Exam success and retention rates bode well for a bright future

A number of outstanding results are demonstrating the appeal of Monash Health as a place to learn and shape your career.

This year 91% of 2023 Interns have accepted HMO2 positions with Monash Health for next year, an increase on last year’s retention rate of 88%.

Chief Medical Officer, Professor Anjali Dhulia said “We are delighted that our interns continue to choose to be part of the Monash Doctors family and are incredibly grateful that they are positively contributing to creating a great work environment”.

In recent weeks we have also seen a number of our doctors training in a range of clinical disciplines celebrating their exam completions and results.

After years in medical school, doctors can take many years to complete their specialty training programs, overseen by their medical specialty college. The specialist exams are a significant milestone in progressing through their respective training programs.

Monash Health offers a range of specialist training.  In our Basic Physician Training (BPT) (Adult Medicine) alone, we have approximately 100 doctors in the program.

BPT trainees spend their first 3 years rotating in many different specialties. Trainees are required to pass the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Written and Clinical examinations to progress to the remaining 3 to 4 years spent in Advanced Physician Training (APT).

A/Prof Claire Dendle, Director of Basic Physician Education shares that Monash Health supported 32 physician trainees in an “intense and exceptionally complex 15-week preparation period” for the Clinical Examinations.

“This year’s exam was brought forward by a couple of months, so the preparation period was shortened. As you can imagine, it has been an intense time for the trainees and the BPT program. “We are pleased that the majority of our trainees who sat the RACP divisional clinical exam passed. We congratulate them as they prepare to move into Advanced Physician Training.

“These exams are really tough and we will wrap support around those who didn’t get through so they have every opportunity to succeed next year.”

Also working and studying hard are trainees in Radiology. Radiology trainees undertake a journey of 8 to 10 years after medical school, pursuing their chosen field of study. Included is their 5-year trainee program overseen by The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR). These efforts are acknowledged by A/Prof Dee Nandurkar, Network Director of Training, Imaging.

“It’s not an easy five years; it takes a lot of academic rigour to commit to excellence while balancing their personal life, work and busy on-call commitments.

“We are pleased with the spectacular results both at part 1 (entrance, first-year trainee exams) and part 2 (exit, fourth-year trainee exams) components. The trainees achieved a 100% pass rate in part 1, and 30 out of 35 components passed the part 2 exam.

“A hearty congratulations to our hardworking Radiology trainees. We are really pleased with the spectacular results both in part 1 and part 2 components of the exams.”

As many will know, plenty of support is required to develop excellent clinicians and to help them on their professional and specialty pathways. Of the collective effort, A/Prof Nandurkar shares that “it takes a village” to develop trainees and the profession.

“Congratulations and thank you to our Radiology department and consultants for their support.”

A/Prof Dendle echoes A/Prof Nandurkar’s sentiment.

“Each year, so many mentors, supervisors and physicians donate their time and energy to support Monash Health trainees in their exam preparations. The ‘paying it forward’ culture is remarkable.

“A special thanks to the short-case mentors and tutors (who did weekly bedside tutorials), the long-case mentors and those who participated in the mock and real exams.

“We are proud of our trainees and physicians at Monash Health.”

Congratulations to all the interns and trainees for their hard work and achievements!
