People matter survey – early results

Thank you for taking part in the 2023 People matter survey. This year 5,935 of our team completed the survey, our highest participation rate ever.

This survey, conducted independently across the Victorian public sector, will allow us to better understand your feelings on engagement, satisfaction, wellbeing, and sense of support and connection with each other and your leaders. And importantly, the volume of good, representative data we’ve received will allow us to make meaningful improvements based on your feedback.

Organisational level results have now been released and Linda Neitz, from our Organisational Development and Learning team took us through these at Tuesday’s Employee Forum.

In summary:

  • Our results have improved across almost all measures since the last People matter survey.
  • Our engagement index, being a measure of how connected you feel to our organisation, has increased 3 points to 67
  • Measures of wellbeing, including positive and negative work emotions, burnout and stress have all improved.
  • We have seen a particularly strong uplift in positive sentiment about learning, development, and your belief that we will take action on this survey.

But you are also telling us we have room for improvement. Although all the lowest-performing statements in this year’s survey have improved since last year, we still have work to do on:

  • Employee wellbeing and the management of stress. We have placed a strong focus on this in recent years and will continue to do so, but we know there is room to do more.
  • The perceived equity and fairness of promotional opportunities. We will seek to understand this more, as we are committed to fair and transparent practice.

What happens next?

Team-level results will be available from early 2024, and over the next few months we’ll be analysing all the data in more detail.

We’re committed to using what you’ve told us to lead organisation-wide change and empower our leaders to transform their local results into local actions.

Visit our People matter survey website to view our presentation on the organisation-level results and for more information about the release of team-level results, focus groups and action planning.

Thank you again to everyone who took the time to complete this year’s People matter survey. We will keep you informed as we celebrate our positive results and work to take action on the areas we need to improve.
