West ward turns into wizarding world for birthday

Today, the lovely team from West 3 at Dandenong Hospital transformed the ward into the magical world of Harry Potter for patient Jemima’s 23rd birthday.

Jemima was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis about 6 and a half years ago. After a recent flare up resulting in her needing a stoma, it was discovered that she had stage 4 cancer.

While Jemima was asleep during the night, our dedicated team got to work decorating the ward to surprise her in the morning.

Despite her tough battle, Jemima remains optimistic and is described as the rock in her family.

“Sometimes things just happen, but its what we make of it and how we use it to help others that makes it worth it. Life is a blessing, and we should use every opportunity we have to bless those around us,” Jemima said.

“Jem is an amazing person and an absolute ray of sunshine. All the staff suggested we do something for her birthday, and we found out she was a Harry Potter fan. Luckily for her, a lot of our staff here are Harry Potter fans too so we all went to work and it couldn’t have come together any better,” Nurse Manager, Rachel Morrisey said.

We hope that today brought joy and warmth to Jemima’s special day despite being away from home, friends and family. Happy Birthday Jemima!
