Mental Health Program celebrates International Nurses Day

On May 8, the Mental Health Program celebrated International Nurses Day (May 12). We saw a great turnout at our host site, Dandenong as well as Casey and Clayton via videoconference.

The Mental Health Program had the opportunity to acknowledge some outstanding nurses and teams, with ANM Ivana Bozalo from Unit 4 awarded for Excellence in Mental Health Nursing, PRECEPT/NaMES educator Sarah Ramasamy being awarded for Excellence in Advocacy, and the East Bentleigh Community Care Unit Team awarded for Excellence in Partnership Work.

Director of Nursing, Tracey Harmer, facilitated the forum and introduced our guest speaker Associate Professor Bridget Hamilton, Director for the Centre for Psychiatric Nursing. Associate Professor Hamilton encouraged all Mental Health nurses to reflect on the therapeutic relationships we build and to remember, that no matter how we see ourselves as nurses, what’s most important is how patients and their families experience our care from their perspective.

She asked us to reflect on the following question:
“Who of the many people we look after each day would give us a reference for our ability to engage and provide care?”
