CE Spotlight – Flu season starts early this year

Monash Health Chief Executive, Andrew Stripp

The influenza season has commenced early this year.

The latest figures show there have been nearly 59,000 laboratory confirmed notifications of influenza in Australia for 2019, while close to 100 deaths have been recorded across NSW, South Australia and Victoria.

The early start to the season is a surprise to us all and if you have been delaying having your influenza vaccine, wait no longer.

As it takes 1-2 weeks to develop immunity after vaccination, those waiting much longer may find they don’t have cover when they most need it.

Remember that our best defense against influenza is vaccination and staying home when you are unwell. We need to protect ourselves, our family, our patients and our colleagues.
