New uniforms bring a smarter, safer look to our security teams

From Monday, Monash Health’s Security Teams will introduce new dark blue uniforms that are smarter, more professional and comfortable. At the same time our Dandenong team will introduce body worn cameras and vests to help deescalate violent situations and provide our security officers with more protection while they protect us and our patients.

The main changes you will see are:

New dark blue polo shirt with a comfortable wicking fabric, dark blue cargo style pants and dark blue soft cell winter jacket. The shirts have the Monash Health Logo on the breast and the word SECURITY on the sleeve whilst the jackets have the Monash Health Logo on the breast and the word SECURITY on the back. You will start seeing these uniforms worn by all our security officers.

Body Worn Cameras – Dandenong only

In an effort to reduce aggression from consumers and visitors and provide greater protection for our security officers, we successfully trialed body worn cameras (BWC) in 2018. Results from the trial and experiences from other hospitals showed significant success in deescalating violent and aggressive situations once the person realises they are being recorded. BWC have been in use in a number of hospitals in Victoria including Royal Melbourne and Western Health and have had a significant impact on reducing violent and aggressive consumers and incidents in general.

The cameras are activated by the wearer when called to an incident and returned to standby mode when the incident concludes. A red light shines when the camera is activated. Our Security Team will always follow strict operating procedures when wearing and using the cameras. These include advising the person they are dealing with that they are being recorded and not using the cameras in inappropriate locations or situations.

Security Vests – Dandenong only

The new vests perform two functions. First they provide a stable platform for the BWCs. Second they provide our officers with added protection from impacts and they are stab and slash proof. The vests are black and have SECURITY written on the front and rear to maximise our team’s visibility and recognition.

The vests and Cameras are only being implemented at Dandenong at present with an aim in future to roll them out across all sites with security personnel.

The new uniforms, BWC and vests are a real step forward in deescalating conflict and protecting our employees. If you have any questions about the new uniforms or equipment please contact me or any of our security officers, who are always happy to explain how we work to protect everyone at Monash Health.
