This summer the Big Red Kidney Bus is coming to Warrnambool.
Kidney Health Australia’s Big Red Kidney Bus program provides a mobile haemodialysis service in partnership with Monash Health to allow people on haemodialysis to take a holiday while receiving treatment.
Open to all Australians on hospital, satellite or home haemodialysis, the Big Red Kidney Bus treats kidney disease patients while on holiday or away from home at no cost.
Patients are treated by experienced Monash Health dialysis nurses and renal technicians.
Kidney bus nurse Anna Flynn has been working on the bus for the past five years.
“I was excited when the bus first started because it meant people receiving dialysis, along with their families, could have a holiday,” she said.
“Some had never been able to have a holiday or be able to afford it, so to see people love the freedom of the bus and return, it is a rewarding feeling.”
Big Red Kidney Bus patient Coral Moran recently travelled from her home in Ararat to visit her family in Mildura after discovering the service.
“The bus enables you to get out of your town and have a change of scenery,” she said.
The Big Red Kidney Bus will be in Warrnambool from Monday 4 November to Saturday 14 December.
