In March 2000 at the age of two years old, Elvio Artico became extremely ill, and after weeks of doctor’s appointments and trips to the emergency department Elvio was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He was then admitted to Monash Medical Centre Clayton where Dr Chris Xenos (Neurosurgeon) performed a lengthy brain operation to remove his tumour.
Following his recovery, he met Dr Peter Downie and his medical team where he underwent six months of aggressive chemotherapy before moving to Peter MacCallum for six weeks of radiation therapy. Over the next 18 years Elvio remained under the care of Dr Peter Downie and Dr Philip Bergman with regular visits, check-ups, blood tests, and MRIs.
Now at the age of 21, Elvio has returned to Monash Medical Centre Clayton, but this time as a personal trainer at Healthwise Fitness. Elvio hopes to inspire and educate people to help them live a healthy and happy life while staying active. In his spare time, he helps to raise money for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation and to date has raised over $12,000.
Elvio recently visited his hero Dr Peter Downie (both pictured) at Monash Children’s Hospital and described it as one of his “proudest days and an absolute honour to be able to work at the same organisation as him”.
