Patient alerts in the EMR for known and suspected COVID-19

To support the management of COVID-19 suspected and known patients, there are some important EMR changes for safe and effective care:

1. Ordering the Respiratory Pathogens PCR test automatically places a clinical alert in the EMR, appearing on the patient’s Banner Bar as ‘COVID 19, Infectious Risk.

**The treating team must add the appropriate Alert manually if a diagnostic test is not ordered at Monash Health.

2. If COVID is detected, the treating team will be notified, and the Infectious Disease team will manually update the clinical alert to ‘Infectious Risk – COVID-19: Known’, the suspected alert will automatically cease

3. If a negative test is returned, a clinical decision and manual management of the alert by the treating team is necessary following the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Procedure.

Detailed instructions can be found in the Documenting a COVID-19 Confirmed/Known Alert QRG.
