International Day of the Midwife

Today marks the International Day of the Midwife as we celebrate the hard work and dedication of midwives across the globe. It is an occasion to celebrate their profession and their remarkable contribution to maternal and newborn health.

This year’s theme is “Celebrate, Demonstrate, Mobilise and Unite- our time is NOW!”

The focus is on celebrating midwives; demonstrating the impact of midwives; mobilising midwives to become advocates for the profession; and uniting midwives towards a common goal of gender equality.

Our midwives deliver over 10,000 births per year across our maternity services and continue to do so during this unprecedented time of COVID-19.

Monash Health midwives are on the frontline every day and continue to deliver high quality midwifery care and compassion for women and their families.

Although we cannot come together to celebrate this extraordinary day, we encourage you to connect virtually with your colleagues and take a moment to reflect on all the wonderful work and amazing contribution to Monash Health.

The official International Day of the Midwife resource pack is available on with great suggestions on how we can celebrate this day.

Don’t forget we are looking for pictures of you and your team in action to help celebrate International Nurses Day and 2020 International Year of the Nurse and Midwife next Tuesday 12 May. Submit the photos to:
