Today is International Nurses Day, a day to celebrate the contribution of nurses around the world, including our 7,500 nurses at Monash Health.
International Nurses Day this year coincides with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Fittingly, in the current climate of COVID-19, Florence was a strong advocate for hand hygiene and sanitation.
The theme for 2020, ‘Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health’, demonstrates how nurses are central to addressing a wide range of health challenges.
Interim Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Clinical Associate Professor Katrina Nankervis, had a special message for our nurses:
Happy International Nurses Day to all our nurses and midwives across Monash Health. I would like to take today to sincerely thank all our nurses and midwives for choosing this challenging but incredibly rewarding career.
I’m immensely proud of the way you are continuing to deliver excellent care through this challenging and rapidly changing time.
We have so many extraordinary examples of what our nurses achieve throughout the year. For the second year in a row Monash Health has been recognised at the HESTA Nursing & Midwifery Awards. Some excellent recognition of those individuals and of the quality of our nursing and midwifery cohort. Congratulations to Tania Green.
It’s also been incredibly impressive to see what our teams can do to adjust their ways of working in the face of a crisis. Our Clinical Nurse Educators have trained over 7000 employees in the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment and a couple of our emergency and ICU nurses have fronted our public messages about the importance of staying home and following social distancing rules. These are just two examples, but there are many.
We lead on so many fronts and for that we should all be very proud.
While this year, we are celebrating differently due to COVID -19, we encourage you to take time to reflect on what you do each and every day and the impact you have on our patients and communities’ lives.
