Third time lucky was the story for his year’s NAMAS, as our nurses and midwives finally celebrated the 15th Annual Nursing and Midwifery Awards and Scholarships on Friday 18 December.
Celebrating the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Katrina Nankervis, announced Karen Sawyer as the 2020 Monash Health Midwife of the Year
Board Chair Dipak Sanghvi and Chief executive Andrew Stripp opened the awards thanking our nurses and midwives for their hard work and dedication throughout this remarkable year.
“Without you all we would be truly lost. Thank you for your efforts, thank you for choosing to work at Monash Health and thank you for all that you do” said Chief Executive, Andrew Stripp.
The event provided an opportunity to celebrate the work of Monash Health nurses and midwives and recognise the significant achievements of individuals and teams

Karen Sawyer was a popular choice for Midwife of the year. Her award was recognition that she is a natural leader and continuously goes above and beyond in pursuit of excellent patient care and improving clinical outcomes and service delivery systems. Karen thrives on challenge and puts the patient and clinical outcome at the forefront of decisions. You will hear more about Karen and her wonderful work and achievements in the new year.
Katrina Nankervis closed the event with a message of thanks and gratitude.
“As always, you have adapted to the changes that have come your way to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients and community. You are the faces that our patients see every day, even under the layers of PPE. The exceptional care you provide is second to none.
“We will look back on this year and the work we have done as one of our greatest achievements.
“Finally I would like to thank you all one more time. You have banded together during this incredibly challenging year. You have met every twist and turn with remarkable agility, hard work and resilience, and I am immensely proud. I acknowledge and thank you for the sacrifices you have made to keep our colleagues and community safe and I hope 2021 brings hope, recovery and rebuilding.”
