Dr Meredith Allen, a Paediatrician in Monash Children’s Hospital Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, is leading research looking into sleep and the effects of being on-call for Senior Medical Staff’s (SMS). This research is in collaboration with Dr Andrew Jeklin and leading sleep researchers from Monash University & Central Queensland University (CQU).
The research project is aimed at SMS and will be conducted across six major tertiary health services to better understand the burden of on-call across specialties, the impact of on-call on sleep, quality of life, and burnout.
Sleep is fundamental to alertness, optimal cognitive, motor performance, and wellbeing. While sleep health research has been conducted on Junior Medical Staff and nurses, very little has been done on SMS which is why we are seeking participation from all SMS across Monash Health.
This study is the first step in quantifying the negative impacts of on-call rosters. The data collected in the survey will inform future focused studies, and potential targeted interventions in high-risk groups. Please only complete the survey if you are a Senior Medical Staff member.
Thresholds will be applied to ensure that no individuals within a cohort are identifiable.
Eligible SMS are invited to please complete the brief 8-minute survey: On-Call: the effect on SMS sleep, burnout, and quality
