Thursday 25 November marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the first day of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, which aims to raise awareness of the various forms of gender-based violence around the world.
As healthcare workers, we have an important role to play when it comes to identifying and responding to family violence. We also have a responsibility to continue to develop our knowledge and skills to be able to take appropriate action.
Throughout the 16 Days of Activism, a series of virtual events are being held by various organisations on a range of topics relating to family violence – find out how you can attend below.
Safe Steps Walk Against Family Violence
The 2021 Walk Against Family Violence (WAFV) will take place across Victoria on Thursday 25 November. Join people from across Victoria to raise awareness and walk in solidarity with victim-survivors of family violence and violence against women, at the 13th Annual Walk Against Family Violence.
Although we can’t walk together around Melbourne’s CBD like in previous years, we can still help raise awareness of and take a stand against family violence and violence against women in our communities by participating in a local walk or “walk from home” event (adhering to COVID-19 restrictions). You can register for the event here.
Webinar with Jess Hill, author and investigative journalist (10am to 11am, Thursday 25 November)
You can register to attend Chisholm Institute’s annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence event featuring keynote speaker and investigative journalist, Jess Hill and The Honourable Gabrielle Williams, Minister for Prevention of Family Violence.
The event will explore the topic – “Where are we now? Working towards the elimination of men’s violence against women.” Register for the webinar here.
Elder Abuse Lunch Time Learnings (12pm to 1pm, Monday 29 November)
This online session is a great opportunity to explore the relationship between older women and abusive sons. The session aims to help you enhance your knowledge and practical skills when working with older people who are experiencing elder abuse. You can find more information here.
