Monash Health Urology Team reflect on the advances in urology

After almost two years’ delay, in late 2021 the Monash Health Urology team were able to hold its 2021 Advances in Urology Seminar, thanks to the dedicated leadership of Monash Urology Director Mr Scott Donnellan, Clinical Nurse Specialist Indra Jolayemi and the Casey Operating Theatre team.

Despite being hosted virtually, this year’s event remained successful with over 100 attendees from within Australia and across the globe participating, including those from Sri Lanka, Tonga and New Zealand.

First held in 2010, the event highlights the importance of professional education and development and allows participants to hear about and discuss the latest in urology.

The theme was ‘Functional Urology’, which focuses on a wide range of female and male urinary system issues relating to the lower urinary tract.

The seminar included a panel discussion, Q&A and presentations from researchers, professionals and practising clinicians in urology including:

  • Mr Scott Donnellan – Functional urology and the importance of patient support
  • Dr Madalena Liu – Urinary stress incontinence and the controversial medical-legal issues on transvaginal mesh surgery
  • Dr Gideon Blecher – Peyronie’s disease and its management
  • Dr Paul Davis – Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction
  • Mr Paul Manohar – Sacro Neuro modulation
  • Dr John Kourambas – Management of stones in the urinary system

Through these discussions and presentations, participants were able to hear valuable insights into new research, breakthroughs, improvements to diagnosis and treatments of functional urology conditions.

The Monash Urology Team also shared their achievements over the past 12 months including the publishing of 30 articles and publications, the establishment of the prostate cancer pathway and fundraising through the annual Pump the pedal event.

The seminar was held in partnership with Boston Scientific, and the Monash Health Urology team would like to thank them for their continuous support and guidance to make this seminar a successful event.

Congratulations to the Monash Health Urology team!
