Clayton ASSU refurbishment complete

Works to complete the refurbishment of the Adult Short Stay Unit at Monash Medical Centre are complete, with the first patients admitted this morning.

The milestone marks completion of clinical works undertaken as part of the Emergency Department Redevelopment Project.

The project began in late 2019, just prior to the beginning of the pandemic.

Jo Morey, Acting General Manager Acute Program, spoke to the gathered emergency teams about the milestone.

“It’s an exciting reward for the clinical teams who have shown such dedication to patient care during such an intense period for health services,” Jo said.

Rachel Rosler, Director of Emergency Medicine at Monash Medical Centre, highlighted the adaptability and resilience of all the emergency teams over the previous years.

“We had demountable resuscitation bays out the front, we worked alongside construction hoarding, and we have moved some emergency services from one location to another multiple times during the pandemic,” Rachel said. “Today is particularly rewarding as we’ve had the ASSU relocated to level five of the building for a long time. It’s great to have the teams back physically located in the same space again.”

The new northern section of the emergency department opened in early 2021, with the refurbished southern area opening in late 2021 just as clinical teams managed a surge in COVID cases.

With the completion of the ASSU, clinical space works are complete. Some traffic improvement works are still underway.
