PPE: Use of personal eyewear

Monash Health’s PPE Expert Advisory Group has reviewed the use of personal PPE and made changes to allow the use of prescription safety eye protection glasses that meet Australian Standards as long as cleaning requirements are met.

Closely fitted wrap-around goggles or safety glasses that meet Australian Standards (AS/NZS 1337.1:2010), when worn correctly, protect the wearer from direct, droplet and aerosol transmission.

Usual prescription glasses, contact lenses or safety glasses that are not wrap-around do not provide adequate protection and are therefore not recommended. See guidance.

How to clean and disinfect protective eyewear

  • Carefully wipe the inside then the outside using a Clinell® wipe. Allow to dry (60 second contact time).
  • Wipe with a dampened microfibre cloth to remove residue if required.
  • Wiping protective eyewear with alcohol can also improve visibility.
  • Place protective eyewear in a ‘breathable’ storage receptacle.
  • Perform hand hygiene.
