Privacy: is it time to refresh your training?

Every day, patients divulge a raft of personal and sensitive information as they access our care. Some of this information they wouldn’t share with their closest friends, but they share it with us.

We also gather and manage personal and sensitive data about our employees.

We have a legal and ethical responsibility to protect the privacy of our patients and employees. We must ensure that the confidentiality of any sensitive information entrusted to us is not breached.

Not all privacy breaches are intentional or malicious, but all can carry hefty consequences, such as strict legal penalties, compromising an APHRA registration – or even termination of employment.

Leaving sensitive data displayed on an unattended computer screen where it is viewed by other people, or “checking in” on a relative’s file who is not in your care, are examples of privacy breaches.

An intentional or deliberate privacy breach means and you could lose your job.

Remember: we can only use data for the reason it was provided, or as strictly permitted by law.

Our mandatory privacy e-learning module has now been available in Latte for 12 months. If you haven’t completed the privacy training module recently, it’s time to do a refresher. The training will help you better understand your legal responsibilities about accessing, disclosing and handling personal information.

With Accreditation approaching, it is important you complete mandatory training as soon as possible.

Log onto Latte now – the privacy training will only take 15 minutes.
