- those aspiring to a surgical career
- those unsure of their future career direction to explore what Monash Health offers
According to Senior Surgical Resident, Assia Comella, a career in surgery can be rewarding in many ways.
“There is a dual work aspect…running around ED…then the moments in theatre which are very focussed,” she says.

Senior Surgical Resident, Assia Comella
Assia enjoys this contrast, which keeps her days interesting. The job also connects her with many people, helping her form friendships that have provided support along the way.
Surgery draws on many skillsets, with communication being key in bringing them all together. Time in theatre involves assuring the patient, and collaborating with nurses, theatre technicians, and the anaesthetist.
Despite being in the early stages of her career, Assia has assisted in many surgeries, and has even led some minor procedures.
Above all, Assia loves the appreciation she receives from patients and families, which gives meaning to the work she does.
Come along this Wednesday to hear from other surgeons and registrars about a career in surgery.
