Elder Abuse – tailoring intervention orders to keep older people safe

On Friday 17 June, our Family Violence team held an online event to coincide with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), which was on 15 June.

We were joined by Her Honour, Magistrate Goldsbrough, Hume Region, Regional Coordinating Magistrate, Lead Family Violence Magistrate, Magistrates’ Court of Victoria, who provided an overview of the importance of tailoring and crafting intervention orders for older people to keep them safe. She also addressed the challenges in providing the elderly with the support they need when faced with elder abuse.

Magistrate Goldsbrough was joined by an expert elder abuse panel, including Detective Sergeant Mark Moloney, Victoria Police Somerville Family Violence Investigation Unit, who explained the challenges faced by Victoria Police when intervention orders involve older people.

Catherine Hayden, Family Consultant, Better Place Australia, also joined the panel to outline the services that can be accessed by our health system, and the challenges that older people may face when applying and dealing with an intervention order.

We had a total of 296 of our employees and local partners join this valuable online session.
