National Stomal Therapy Week

This week is National Stomal Therapy Week (20-26 June), an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the partnership of Stomal Therapy Nurses with people who have stomas and those that support them.

A stoma is a surgically created opening in the abdomen that allows bowel movements to leave the body.

Every day this week, our Stomal Therapy Clinical Nurse Consultants ran a stall at the Meeting Point at Monash Medical Centre.

“One of our team has been at the stall between 8am and 3pm, Monday to Friday,” says Kirrily Podkriznik, Stomal Therapist and Wound and Paediatric Urology CNC. “We’re also visiting wards to run blitz education sessions about stomas. We want to help raise awareness and reduce stigma for people who have stomas.”

You can learn more about Stomal Therapy Nurses and the work they do by visiting the stall, or by visiting the Australian Association of Stomal Therapy Nurses website.
