We went the extra mile for this newborn!

Annette McIvor was leaving work when she heard a woman’s cries.

In a car parked outside Dandenong Hospital, Leonora was giving birth – and Annette sprang into action.

“These types of situations don’t trouble me,” says Annette.

Annette is an Administration Officer with Monash Health, but she has no medical training. Nonetheless, she kept Leonora and her partner Rini calm and supported Leonara to give birth to her newborn baby.

Kate Sandry, Director of Clinical Operations at Dandenong Hospital, heard the commotion outside her office window and rushed onto David Street to assist.

“I’m a former ED nurse,” says Kate. “So I’ve delivered two or three in a car before, and one in a lift here at Dandenong Hospital. But not for a few years.”

Kate says that Annette and Rini, the baby’s father, did an excellent job delivering the baby. “I said to the husband, not many people can say that they delivered their own child!”

“I had to lean against the car,” Rini says. “I was feeling a bit lightheaded.”

Midwives from maternity arrived quickly to take care of Leonora and the newborn boy, who has been named Idris. Soon after birth Rini and Idris had skin-t0-skin contact, and we’re happy to report that the whole family is healthy and well. They are now resting comfortably at home.
