Friday 26 August is Wear it Purple Day!
Wear it Purple Day was established to show LGBTI+ young people across the globe that there is hope, that there are people who support and accept them, and that they have the right to be proud of who they are.
Since its small beginnings, this inclusive day has grown into a worldwide movement to support and recognise the LGBTI+ community and LGBTI+ youth in particular.
Lara Husselbee, the incoming President of Wear it Purple, says that being visible is a privilege many LGBTI+ people don’t experience.
“For our youth, two of the many factors impacting this is their safety and the role models they have around them: people who are confident to carry courageous conversations, to ask questions, to learn, to create space for youth voices and to actively listen. So often, we can be caught up in the data or the words in the messages we are trying to deliver and as a result we are forgetting we are talking about people.”
Show your support for our LGBTI+ community, and particularly our LGBTI+ youth, this Friday by dressing up and wearing something purple. Please make sure you still meet our uniform requirements.
We’d love to see how you celebrate. Please send photos of your team’s Wear it Purple Day outfits to lgbti@monashhealth.org.
