New Behaviour Support Specialist Program providing continued disability support to our community

Monash Health’s Centre for Developmental Disability Health has recently launched the Behaviour Support Specialist Program (BSS). BSS aims to support adults with intellectual disabilities in achieving and maintaining optimal health, independence, social inclusion and quality of life.

With long wait lists for NDIS support and limited access to Behaviour Support Practitioners, BSS addresses a growing need for Behaviour Support Clinicians within the disability sector, and assists in providing supporting evidence and documentation to the NDIS when needed. BBS is also available for inpatient services, providing support for behaviour management in wards.

BSS will work with eligible patients to build communication plans that can help to reduce barriers through positive behaviour. Positive behaviour support can:

  • enhance lifestyle improvement
  • identify why behaviours are present through functional assessments
  • teach new skills while using and providing supports
  • enrich lives with activities and social interactions
  • empower the individual to cope and manage their behaviours, emotions, and improve their own lives
  • help families and supports with strategies to respond to and reinforce positive behaviours.

BSS consults can be facilitated face-to-face, via Telehealth, or by phone.

If you would like more information about BSS, you can email cddh@monashhealth.org, or download the brochure.
