Kindness is the heart of all that we do

Today is World Kindness Day (13 November), and all week we have celebrated the ways we incorporate kindness in all that we do.

At the Employee Forum on Tuesday, Jabeen Ali, Volunteer Coordinator, and Jenny Hill, a volunteer with the Chemo Day Unit and Moorabbin spoke about the random acts of kindness they see every day at work.

Wednesday’s Medical Grand Round was presented by Professor Michael Fischer, Professor of Organisational Culture and Leadership and titled ‘What can we do to create more compassionate workplaces for ourselves and others?’.  Hosted by Dr Anand Ponniraivan, Director Medical Services, the Grand Round explored strategies for building compassionate cultures at work.

Our Employee Wellbeing Forum this week was a Schwartz Round on the topic of ‘Love in the trenches – The power of love in healing.’ Facilitated by Claire Pierce, General Manager of Specialist Clinics, Health Information and Language Services, the panel recounted acts of kindness that made all the difference in patients’ care.

Mariah D’Cunha, Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse, spoke about the nurturing power of skin-to-skin contact for premature babies; Associated Professor Michael Franco, Chief Medical Information Officer and Program Director EMR and Informatics, told the moving story of spending time with a very ill young patient; and Sara Jorgenson, Breast Care Nurse, emphasised the importance of active listening in patient care.
