Last week Monash Children’s Hospital hosted a visit by Simulation Australasia Chair, Philip Swadling, to meet the team behind the award-winning ONE-Sim Education project.
Founded in 2016 by Associate Professor Atul Malhotra and Associate Professor Arunaz Kumar, the ONE-Sim Education workshop-based program received the Simulation Australasia Project Innovation Award this year for its contribution to improving the procedural and teamwork skills of health professionals involved in obstetric and neonatal emergencies during childbirth.
“We are delighted to be recognised with this national award from Simulation Australasia. Every recognition helps spread the vital message regarding interprofessional education,” says A/Prof Malhotra, who was the founding co-chair of Monash Children’s Hospital Simulation.
Building on the individual training each healthcare professional receives, A/Prof Malhotra says that ONE-Sim Education “brings all the training together”. To date, the ONE-Sim Education workshop has trained over 3,000 healthcare professionals to help improve patient outcomes.
“ONE-Sim Education workshops are not just run in Australia, they are run across the world, as well,” says A/Prof Kumar. Beyond the Monash Health community, the ONE-Sim Education model has been shared internationally, helping to reduce mortality rates for women and babies overseas by upskilling healthcare workers.
Monash Health Foundation assists with fundraising for ONE-Sim Education, resulting in only a nominal fee being charged for the workshops in Australia, and free overseas in low-resource settings, making the program widely accessible.
The visit by Mr Swadling was an opportunity for him to meet the ONE-Sim Education team, and present them with the award and certificates.
Our congratulations go to all the dedicated employees behind ONE-Sim Education, taking pioneering and life-saving initiatives well beyond our Monash Health community.
