Monash Health supported ten Emerging Researcher Fellows in 2022 from Allied Health, Nursing and Medicine. Applications are now open for 2023.
Roz Shand, Speech Pathologist, completed the Fellowship in 2019.
“Completing the Emerging Researcher Fellowship allowed me to dip my toe into research and develop a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience. This gave me the confidence to pursue a PhD.”
Roz’s project looked at nursing staff’s perspectives of communication difficulty on two sub-acute rehabilitation wards.
Roz hoped her project would have a direct impact on the ward where she was working.
Roz has submitted the research for publication and her PhD is an extension of this research.
The Emerging Researcher Fellowship allowed Roz to gain some research experience while maintaining her clinical role.
The Fellowship acted as a bridge between her clinical work and commencing a PhD – Roz has recently been awarded a scholarship and she is undertaking her PhD while maintaining a part-time role at Monash Health.
“I was able to work with and learn from a fantastic team of experienced researchers, who are now my PhD supervisors. It also provided an ideal path into clinical research, something I have always been interested in. I wanted to pursue a research project that had sprung directly from my experiences as a clinician. The Emerging Researcher Fellowship is an opportunity to do that!”
The Monash Health Emerging Researcher Fellowship is a unique opportunity for Monash Health staff from all health-related professional backgrounds to undertake a research project within the organisation, with some paid salary support, either to increase their time fraction (if they are part time) or backfill a portion of their substantive role.
