Poppies for a purpose: Chestnut Gardens knits up a storm

Commemorations for ANZAC Day took pride of place at Chestnut Gardens last week, as its residents worked tirelessly to create an eye-catching poppy garland that was hung across the atrium windows.

The respectful display was the hard work of Chestnut Gardens’ very own knitting club, which forms part of their Lifestyle Program.

Carolyn Greely, Facility Manager at Chestnut Gardens, says the project provided a meaningful focus for the keen knitters.

“The task helped the residents feel like they’re creating something special.”

Despite only four members forming the current knitting club, with the help of the local Doveton Community Centre Knitting Group, plus some Chestnut Gardens employees – they collaboratively knitted 500 poppies out of wool!

“We’ve had so much amazing feedback from families,” says Carolyn.

The Chestnut Gardens knitting club is just one of the fun activity groups on offer at Chestnut Gardens. Through the Lifestyle Program, residents can also participate in tai chi, craft, stretching sessions, bingo, and cinema and lunch outings. They are also occasionally visited by local musicians and entertainers.

Not stopping there, the knitting group has now set its sights on donating to the Vinnies Winter Appeal, by turning their knitted squares into blankets. We wish them all the best for this great initiative!
