What does it mean to be an ally? Join us at our IDAHOBIT event on Wednesday

As part of Monash Health’s Equity and Inclusion strategy the LGBTIQA+ sub committees’ vision is to ensure we lead the way in respecting, celebrating and warmly welcoming people of every gender, gender identity, intersex variation and sexual orientation.

Achieving this vision requires the involvement of each and every one of us, standing alongside and supporting our LGBTIQA+ colleagues and community as allies.

What is an Ally?

We all have different life experiences growing up, fitting in, feeling safe, finding community and discovering identity. But allyship is all about the values we share. Being an ally means standing up for those whose human rights are denied, ignored or abused. Being an ally means using your privilege and power to fight for systemic change. Being an ally means never taking the spotlight but supporting in solidarity and uplifting the voices of the community. (Source: Amnesty International LGBTQIA+ ally guide)

On Wednesday 17 May at 2pm we invite you to join us for a panel discussion with our colleagues at Monash Health. Together, we will explore what it means to be an ally and what support in the workplace looks like. This event coincides with the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), reminding us of the significance of our collective efforts.

By participating in this discussion and embracing allyship, we can help create a more inclusive environment for all individuals. Let’s learn from one another, and work towards a future where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered.
