Yesterday was the beginning of NAIDOC Week (2 to 9 July). For those who are unaware, NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins stem back from the 1920s with the emergence of Aboriginal groups who sought to increase awareness in the community of the treatment of First Nations people Today, NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for us to come together and pay respect to culture, language, and Country, and to recognise and celebrate the achievements of all First Nations peoples.
The theme of NAIDOC Week this year is “For our Elders”. Across every generation, Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in First Nations communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and loved ones.
