Changes to Government Parental Leave Pay are coming into effect on 1 July 2023 under the Paid Parental Leave Act 2010.
It is important to note that the below specifically only applies to Government Parental Leave Pay. There are no amendments to your existing entitlements under an Enterprise Agreement as an Employee of Monash Health.
Traditionally this entitlement was for a payment of Government Parental Leave Pay for up to 18 weeks while you care for a child born or adopted. Changes from 1 July 2023 include:
- Extending the paid parental leave pay from 18 weeks for primary carer and 2 weeks for Dad and Partner pay to 20 weeks in total. Two of the 20 weeks are only accessible where both parents claim and are eligible.
- This means that Employee couples will be able to claim up to 20 weeks’ paid parental leave between them. Parents who are single at the time of their claim can access the full 20 weeks.
- The whole period of 20 weeks can be accessed flexibly and may be able to claim this entitlement in multiple blocks until the child turns two.
The existing procedure for Parental Leave and associated resources are currently being updated and will be communicated once finalised. In the meantime, please ensure you familiarise yourself with the Services Australia Parental Leave Pay.
This process is managed outside of Monash Health, if you have any questions regarding this, please use the appropriate contact methods through the Services Australia site.
