Our Lotus bags have arrived

As hundreds of purple bags make their way to wards and units this week, the Patient Experience Team is proud to announce the official commencement of our Lotus bag initiative.

The initiative brings a simple change to the end-of-life process by introducing tastefully designed bags for the respectful and compassionate return of the personal belongings of all adult patients and residents that pass away in our care.

The bags feature a lotus flower – a symbol of purity, eternity and strength. Inside, is a white drawstring bag for placing the personal belongings of patients; a sympathy card where our teams can provide a message of compassion; a packet of forget-me-not seeds; and helpful resources to support families through the process of grief and making practical arrangements.

Distribution commenced this week

The distribution of bags commenced this week across Monash Medical Centre. Bags will be distributed to all other relevant Monash Health sites over the coming two weeks.

At Monash Medical Centre, stock will be held in the following areas:

  • McCulloch House
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Ward 41
  • Ward 42
  • Emergency
  • Social Work

Nursing Coordinators (NCOs) will also hold a reserve of these bags so they can be accessed after hours, if required.

For every family, for every area

A Lotus bag should be used to return the personal belongings of any adult patient or resident who passes away in our care.

They will be available to all areas and all relevant facilities across Monash Health, with more information about where stock will be held to be shared as distribution continues.

Hearing from families

As we roll out this new initiative, we would like to capture feedback from families or carers who receive a Lotus bag.

The Patient Experience Team will be providing a log sheet to record feedback from families, and a feedback card with a QR code to place inside the bag. We ask for your support in capturing any comments from families. The feedback and evaluation process will take place for approximately three months.

The initiative is a step forward in our dedication to delivering comprehensive care not only to our patients but also to their loved ones during difficult times.
