Today we are recognising our Emergency Nurses on International Emergency Nurses Day. Yet, every single day, nurses in emergency departments across the world go above and beyond to care for patients with a broad range of conditions, providing vital expertise and support.
Whether it’s tending to the elderly, the young, the injured or the very sick, it takes a special kind of person to work in this profession.
Last year, there were over 245,000 emergency presentations across our Monash Health sites. We are so fortunate to have extraordinary nurses providing the best possible care to our patients.

To celebrate International Emergency Nurses Day, we asked some of the emergency nursing team at Monash Medical Centre what they love about their role.
“My emergency family means a lot to me.”
Carolyn O’Donovan has worked as an Emergency Nurse for 35 years – 33 of those have been spent providing care to patients at Clayton. “It’s the teamwork and diversity of patients and feeling like I can make a difference to them and their families that I love,” said Carolyn.
Grateful for the team around her, she told us, “My emergency family means a lot to me.”
For Emergency Nurse Jenny Nyugen, it’s the fact that, “Every day is unexpected, every day we meet different people and each time, I’m here to help, to make the situation better.”

Emergency Nurse Brittany Grimshaw loves, “Being able to see people improving and providing treatment that makes them better.”

Associate Nurse Manager Nathan Lightbody enjoys the interdisciplinary aspect of working in the Emergency Department at Monash Medical Centre.
“It’s an amazing team,” Nathan said. “From our medical team to our nursing staff – they are all fantastic.”
Thank you to all our Emergency Nurses who go above and beyond to care for our community.
