Let’s change the story – rewatch our 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence event

We were joined earlier this week by Anu Krishnan from Kulturbrille who discussed the impact of culture in identifying and responding to family violence.

With roughly one in four of our population born overseas, we live in a truly diverse society.  Connecting someone’s experience or an act of violence to their cultural background can increase the risk of harm to individuals and their communities. This is because blaming ‘culture’ perpetuates racial stereotypes and can act to disempower narratives. Violence against women, children and gender diverse people is a risk in all communities.

Anu articulated strategies to ensure we remain vigilant to signs of abuse in health settings, so we can take steps to move towards a future where everyone’s perspective is culturally aligned, fostering a responsive, inclusive, and adaptable environment.
