Launching Monash Health’s Reconciliation Action Plan 2023-2025

Monash Health launched its third Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) today.

Led by the Aboriginal Health and Engagement team and Aboriginal Health Working group, this important document has been developed in consultation with First Nations communities, community-controlled organisations, Reconciliation Australia, and countless leaders from across Monash Health.

Reconciliation is everybody’s business, and we all benefit from the change it brings,” says Martin Keogh, Acting Chief Executive.

“This action plan embeds that spirit of reconciliation in the work that we do, and I welcome the benefits it will have for our community.”

This new plan outlines the path forward for our reconciliation action, as Monash Health works alongside First Nations communities as leaders in ‘Closing the Gap’.

Here are just a few of the actions Monash Health will implement with our RAP:

  • We will recruit more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consumer Advisors to ensure our care is informed by First Nations perspectives.
  • We will implement the Culturally Safe Maternity Spaces project, installing First Nations art in 26 maternity and newborn service spaces across all Monash Health maternity sites.
  • And we will expand our Health Koori Kids Clinic to meet the rising demand of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care.

“This strategy has been developed in collaboration and consultation with First Nations communities,” says Dan Carter, Chief Aboriginal Health Advisor. “We look forward to delivering this work together.”

The RAP speaks to our commitment to engage our people in the journey of reconciliation, strengthen our relationships with First Nations communities, and develop and pilot innovative strategies to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
