A new 2023 COVID-19 vaccine is now available

This month, a new 2023 COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer Omicron XBB 1.5 and Moderna Omicron XBB 1.5) became available to all Victorians.

How is this vaccine different?

While the first COVID-19 vaccines targeted the original strain of the virus and the second ‘bivalent’ vaccines targeted new strains, the 2023 vaccine/booster will also target another XBB lineage of the Omicron variant.

The 2023 vaccine provides improved cover for the strains we are seeing in the community currently and those we are likely to see in the near future.

Who should consider getting vaccinated?

Victorian healthcare workers have been well protected against COVID-19. However, for most people over 18 years of age, it is timely and recommended to consider getting a 2023 booster to ensure that you are also well-protected against the latest strains.

The recommendations from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) are:

2023 booster

ATAGI recommends a 2023 COVID-19 vaccine/booster dose for adults in the following groups, regardless of the number of prior doses received, if it has been six months since infection or vaccination: all adults aged 65 years and over, and adults aged 18 to 64 years who have disability with significant or complex health needs or medical comorbidities that increase their risk of severe COVID-19.

Additional 2023 booster

It is recommended that all adults aged over 75 years should receive an additional 2023 COVID-19 vaccine dose if six months have passed since their last dose.

ATAGI advises that the following groups should consider an additional 2023 COVID-19 vaccine dose if six months have passed since their last dose, after discussion with their healthcare provider: all adults aged 65 to 74 years, and adults aged 18 to 64 years who are severely immunocompromised.

This advice applies to early 2024. ATAGI will provide further information in the new year.

See the detailed recommendations.

Vaccinations/boosters are an important consideration for every member of our community, but even more so for employees working in patient-facing roles. By getting vaccinated, you not only protect yourself but also contribute to the wellbeing of your colleagues, patients, and the broader community.

Where can I get the vaccine?

The vaccine is now available from all major pharmacies throughout Australia and from your local GP. Pfizer Omicron XBB 1.5 will also be available from Monash Health Immunisation for those employees who are due for a booster dose.
