Prepare to work safely in heat and outdoor environments this summer

High heat can affect anybody

You and your team’s health, safety and wellbeing are our top priority.

During summer, we see an increase in radiant heat and higher temperature days. This may cause an increase in heat-related illness and exacerbate pre-existing medical conditions.

It is important to take care of yourself and others as the temperature rises.

At work, it is worth revisiting your work environment and completing summer heat risk controls via the risk assessment process. A risk management approach is used to manage the risk associated with exposure as outlined in our OHS Extreme Weather procedure. Also, spend some time reviewing the OHS Extreme Weather Alert Checklist to identify and determine any actions required.

It is also worth checking the BOM site app at the start of each week and planning your team’s safety from heat exposure for the week.

What else can I do?

There are simple things you can do to stay safe in the heat:

  • Plan ahead
  • Drink plenty of water and keep a drink bottle on hand
  • Spend as much time as possible in cool or air-conditioned buildings
  • Look after those most at risk in the heat

If you or anyone you know feels unwell on a hot day call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24 or call 000 in an emergency.
