Join us to celebrate International Day of People with Disability at 2pm today, with our special guest speaker, Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM.

About International Day of People with Disability

This important day, celebrated each year on 3 December, aims to raise awareness, understanding and acceptance of the 4.4 million people with disability in Australia.

It’s an opportunity to celebrate the contributions and achievements of people with disabilities and to promote inclusion through our organisation.

About Dr Dinish Palipana OAM

Halfway through medical school, Dinesh Palipana was involved in a horrific car accident that left him with quadriplegia, affecting the use of his fingers and arms, and paralysing him below the chest.

Despite this, Dinesh remained determined to fulfil his dream of working in medicine and returned to his studies to become the first quadriplegic medical intern in Queensland and the second person to graduate medical school with quadriplegia in Australia.

Dinesh now works as an emergency doctor at the busy Gold Coast University Hospital and is a passionate disability advocate, fighting for equitable healthcare and employment access for people with disabilities.

Dinesh’s list of accolades and associations is extensive. He is co-founder of Doctors With Disabilities Australia, Senior lecturer at Griffith University, Adjunct research fellow at the Menzies Health Institute of Queensland, research fellow at the Jamieson Trauma Institute, doctor to the Gold Coast Titans physical disability rugby team, and Senior Advisor to the Disability Royal Commission.

Join us to hear Dinesh’s story about navigating the healthcare system as both a patient and an employee with disability, and how we can allow our people and organisations to reach their full potential.

Update on our Disability Strategy and Action Plan 2023 – 2027

We will also hear from Sue Viney and Kellie Hammerstein, Co-chairs of our Disability Consumer Advisory Group, about the vital work our Disability Strategy and Action Plan is already instituting across Monash Health.

Monash Health’s Disability Strategy and Action Plan 2023-2027 outlines our commitment to provide inclusive, accessible, and respectful healthcare and employment for everyone.

Join us to celebrate International Day of People with Disability at 2pm today.
