This 90min interactive workshop covers the principles and practical skills of critical appraisal. Work through a clinical paper using an appraisal checklist to determine whether a piece of research has been done properly and that the information it reports is reliable and trustworthy. This session covers:

• Understanding the critical appraisal process – why we need to appraise
• Reliability – is the question addressed and the study design sound?
• Identifying bias – what is the accuracy and credibility of a study?
• Findings – what are the results and are they valid?
• Applicability – will the results help locally?
• Practical session – work through a clinical paper to identify validity of study design, methodology and results.
