Monash Health Library – Critical Appraisal of Medical Literature Workshop
This 90min interactive workshop covers the principles and practical skills of critical appraisal. Work through a clinical paper using an appraisal checklist to determine whether a piece of research has been done properly and that the information it reports is reliable and trustworthy. This session covers:
- Understanding the critical appraisal process – why we need to appraise
- Reliability – is the question addressed and the study design sound?
- Identifying bias – what is the accuracy and credibility of a study?
- Findings – what are the results and are they valid?
- Applicability – will the results help locally?
- Practical session – work through a clinical paper to identify validity of study design, methodology and results.
