Critical care nurses and doctors are often called upon to manage the complex airway of an acutely unwell patient. Along with the challenges of forming a cohesive team, there may be differences in the clinical approach and management between specialties, which can add an extra layer of difficulty to an already challenging situation.

TRAC provides participants from critical care specialties with a shared template for the management of the unanticipated difficult airway. Along with practising the technical skills necessary for advanced airway management, participants will explore the human factors skills vital for effective team performance.

Course at a glance

TRAC uses a blended learning approach to improve airway planning and intubation skills. The program incorporates videos, discussions, clinical workshops and simulation to explore the topics of rapid sequence induction (RSI) and non-surgical and surgical techniques to safely manage the unanticipated difficult airway.

Who can attend?

Critical Care (Emergency/ICU/Anaesthetic) Doctors:

• Consultants
• Senior registrars
• Junior registrars with a minimum of one year experience in critical care
• HMOs/SRMOs with a minimum of one year experience in critical care

Registered Nurses:

• Critical care (including PACU) nurses who assist with airway management
• Endoscopy/diagnostic imaging nurses (who regularly perform the role of airway assistant)
• Critical care nurse educators
