Monash Health has partnered with the Office of the Public Advocate to deliver a webinar on Consent or Refusal of Medical Treatment for Patients with a Disability.
The webinar will assist health practitioners to:
- explore and discuss the definition of Decision-Making Capacity in relation to the Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016
- understand the legislative process involved when patients do not have the capacity to make medical treatment decisions
- gain skills and knowledge about augmentative and alternative communication strategies when engaging and communicating with patients with a disability.

Presenters
- Michelle Wilcox – Michelle has a Diploma in Community Welfare Work and is the coordinator of the Healthy Discussions Project at the Victorian Office of the Public Advocate. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at six months of age, Michelle is a tenacious self-advocate determined to break down the barriers which often prevent people with disability from being able to communicate their needs and preferences regarding their own health.
- Katie Riceputo – Katie has a degree in Social Work and Psychology and is the Education and Engagement Officer with the Office of the Public Advocate. Previously, Katie has worked at DHHS as a Behaviour Support Practitioner in disability services. Katie has worked for many years as a trainer and assessor at TAFE teaching across the Diploma of Community Services.
The webinar forms part of Monash Health’s commitment to eliminating barriers that prevent people from accessing and participating in its services. We have dedicated teams to support our workforce in supporting person-centred care for those with disability through our Disability Liaison Officers and Advance Care Planning Services.
