We are committed to providing a safe workplace for our employees. To support this, we are excited to launch our new OHS Internal Audit Program.
Safety Audits are a key requirement of our OHS program and a legislative requirement. There are two types of audits that make up our new program; OHS Workplace Audits and OHS Targeted Audits.
The aim of the audit program is to provide an effective way to identify, eliminate and control hazards and risks which impact our workforce. It also provides the opportunity for Managers to increase and upskill their safety capabilities via direct coaching.
All departments will be audited at least once every three years. After the audit Managers will be provided with a report and assigned actions.
The Safety team is here to coach and support you and your team, to improve safety performance.
What is a Workplace Audit?
The purpose of a workplace audit is to assess actions taken to meet key manager health and safety tasks. The OHS workplace audit is a gap analysis, to help identify where further coaching and upskilling is required, to verify the implementation of key OHS procedures, in consultation with the Manager and Health and Safety Representatives.
What is a Targeted Audit?
Targeted Audits will directly assess the implementation of key control measures to reduce the risk of common hazards such as Manual Handing, Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances, Occupational Violence and Aggression, and Back of House loading dock areas. These audits are targeted based on incident data and hazards in the area.
What do I need to do if my area is to be audited?
As a Manager, you will be notified one month prior to your planned audit.
You will be provided with a Manager Safety Toolkit with a checklist to prepare for your audit, and an internal auditor will complete a desktop review before the scheduled audit.
On the day of the audit, the internal Auditor will introduce the audit, and work with you and Health and Safety Representative (HSRs) to answer the audit questions. The Auditor will coach you on any identified gaps and assign actions. Any assigned actions require completion within a three-month period.
An audit will take approximately 60 minutes.
We discussed the new audit program at our recent Manager Briefing. If you missed it, you can watch the recording here or download the presentation slides.
