A message of support and solidarity during challenging times
This week’s news has been shocking and confronting, and I want to acknowledge that I am highly conscious of the significant burden that the conflict in the Middle East may have on some of you. It is difficult for any citizen of the world to watch the effect of warfare on civilians on such a scale and not be moved. While we’ve committed ourselves to delivering outstanding healthcare, it’s equally crucial to acknowledge the humane facet of our organisation and the sentiments that influence our people during challenging times like these.
I understand that this conflict and the disturbance it ushers may profoundly impact those of us with family and friends residing in the affected regions or those deeply concerned about the situation at large. Anxiety, sadness, and uncertainty are all valid responses to the challenging circumstances we are witnessing.
As a healthcare institution, we have consistently championed compassion, care, and steadfast support for those in our care and one another. Our mutual dedication to easing suffering and extending comfort transcends the confines of our facilities, and across the diverse communities we are privileged to be a part of and serve.
As healthcare professionals, we can’t help but have our thoughts go out to the first responders and health service personnel dealing with what can only be an overwhelming situation and the injured and loved ones of the casualties.
I hope to promote open, safe discussion and support within our healthcare community in these moments. We are here to bolster each other, offer a listening ear, and assist where necessary. If you are struggling, please remember you are not alone and can reach out to your peers or manager or contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for help. I encourage you to use our range of support services whenever needed.
Of course, I trust that even if you are not directly impacted, you will be mindful and sensitive in your interactions with those around you, including our patients and families. Worry and anxiety can manifest themselves in different ways, including challenging behaviours, and our trademark Monash Health compassion and understanding will go a long way in these situations.
Amid worldwide unpredictability, I find it helps to remember that our commitment to healthcare is a force for good. Our work is anchored in the principles of empathy and unity. This crisis serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of these values, not only in our professional lives but also in our personal lives. By persisting in delivering high-quality care, we are creating a beneficial impact daily, both locally and more broadly. Your steadfast dedication to our patients and each other serves as a source of encouragement and optimism for those most in need and inspires me in my role as a leader.
As we move through these challenging times, let’s rely on one another and remain hopeful for peace.
Please take care of yourselves, and thank you for caring for our patients, community, and each other, always.
