Improving care and access for children with diabetes – read more about this quarter’s STAR Winners

Chief Executive Andrew Stripp announced the STAR Award winner for the Improving Care and Access category. The winner this quarter is the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. Acting Head Dr Justin Brown and Diabetes Nurse Educator Adam Lamendola joined the recent employee forum to accept the award on behalf of the team. If you missed the forum, you can watch the recording here.

The Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes is a multidisciplinary team comprised of diabetes nurse educators, dieticians, social workers, psychologists, administrative employees and doctors, all dedicated to the care of approximately 900 children living with Type 1 Diabetes in Victoria.

Children with Type 1 Diabetes require continual care due to the significant risks of life-threatening low or high blood sugar on insulin treatment. The work required to provide the best care for these children increased during the pandemic.

In response to the challenges of the pandemic, the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes put in an enormous effort to rapidly and significantly increase the access to diabetes technologies in children. This allowed remote monitoring of blood sugar levels using continuous glucose monitors. The continuous glucose monitors were able to be accessed by diabetes nurse educators and doctors in the team and allowed for estimated HbA1c measurements.

The success of the team in quickly responding to the changing needs of their patients during the pandemic is a testament to the excellent level of care they provide. Congratulations to the team!
